Padang Surf Shop

Imagine going on a surf trip with just “carry on” luggage. . .

Anyone who has been on a surf trip overseas knows the hassle of carting surfboards and associated accessories through airports, buses and other modes of transport . . .  and a lot of the time the cost of transporting your boards can end up costing you almost as much, sometimes even more than what the boards worth!

Watch out in particular if you’re flying Lion Air in Indonesia. They are now charging 1,000,000 IDR per surfboard . . .  that’s $100 Australian dollars per surfboard . . . and they open the board bags to check how many boards you have. And that’s for each leg of the journey . . .  So if you’re flying with Lion Air from Bali to Padang that’s $100 per surfboard from Bali to Jakarta and then the same again for the flight from Jakarta to Padang.. .  it adds up!!

Padang in Western Sumatera is the gateway to many locations with some of the world’s most perfect waves.

Places like the Mentawais , Banyaks, Telos and many other perfect waves at lesser known spots

I was in Padang a few months ago and caught up with another old mate, Padang local Budi Toreto who is the owner of Padang Surf Shop.

Budi has an extensive range of surfboards to suit almost everyone’s skill level or taste . . .

At last count he had over 200 surfboards in stock!!!

He’s been selling and renting boards to surf travellers for a few years now.

You can contact him and let him know what you’re looking for and he will send you photos and details of 10-12 surfboards for you to choose from.

Then he will have the surfboard in a cover with wax, legropes and fins waiting for you at your hotel in Padang or at the Mentawai Fast ferry or if possible Budi will have it transported to the surf camp or resort you’re staying at.

Of course this is not a solution for everybody . . . but if Budi can find you a board that suits you, it can save you a hell of a lot of hassle . . . and money.
Alternatively, if you bring your own surfboards . . . you could sell your boards to Budi when your trip is over and you’ll get some cash in your pocket and travel a lot lighter on the way home.
Maybe you just want a backup board? Just rent from Budi
