Welcome to Indo Surf & Lingo
Indo Surf & Lingo, the book was first published in 1991 and put together and authored by Peter Neely
Peter saw the book as a way he could keep returning and cement the close relationships he had with his Balinese families
He kept the book going and released new editions every year or two.
Peter was always careful not to release too much information, rather than giving away secrets he would provide a guide to the known surf spots and prompt people to look a bit further to see what they could find . . .
These days there aren’t many secrets left out there, with new resorts and charter boats popping up weekly in some of Indonesia’s most remote locations
Surfing and more specifically “Surf travel” has been a huge boost to the economy in Indonesia and some areas have seen local families become very well off . . . where a few decades back they led very simple existences in their villages as fishermen and farmers.
In fact, some resorts, started by expats, particularly those considered to be in the luxury space have provided jobs and incomes to families and even whole villages where previously there was very little or none.
So, as we’ve taken on this business, it became clear that there’s a fine line between exposing a secret surf spot and helping Indonesian people from remote areas move above the poverty line and provide a better life for their families, now and in the future.
Sadly, Peter passed away in 2020 and the website and book sat stagnant during the pandemic and a year or so afterwards.
I decided to take the business on as a sideline and hobby partnered with my wife Sonja, who is Indonesian in early 2023 and we purchased the business from Peter’s wife Lynn.
Our mission is to keep the book and website going in the style that Peter always promoted . . . and that is enjoy the waves of Indonesia and to reach out and explore the islands.
While doing this Peter believed (as we do) that enjoying the waves, sights and beautiful locations of Indonesia could be something even more special if you take the time to learn a bit of the language and interact and forge friendships with the locals.
