MALUKU
BEST TIME TO TRAVEL:
JANUARY FEBRUARY NOVEMBER DECEMBER
Pacific Ocean north swells travel down past the Phillipines and peel along hundreds of coral atolls from Halmahera to Morotai. First discovered in the 1990’s, the high cost of getting to Indonesia’s far north-east kept these Maluku island waves empty.
Only a few yachts travel to these “Spice Islands”, some including waves in West Papua. All year has swell, but typhoon season is quite dangerous for yachts, so surf trips only run a few months, from November to February with consistent 3 to 6 foot waves. Check: www.indopacificsurf.com. Outside these months support local guide Ilham www.halmaheraquest.com. You can call him on WhatsApp +62 852 9836 0813
A new resort has just opened named Moro Ma Doto. 25 villas along an exclusive beach with 3 friendly waves out front, surrounded by a pristine 62 hectare tropical coconut palm forest – www.moromadoto.com.
